On Saturday 17th May, Newquay Tretherras secured first place when students took to the waves to compete in the Cornish Schools’ Surf Championship, held at Fistral Beach.

The competition saw children from 25 different schools from across the county battle it out in a variety of age category events.

The Under 16s Girls Final was dominated by Tretherras students with Mischa Maguire, Jordy Lowe, Jess Knight and Rosalie Longman taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Three of the girls – Mischa, Rosalie and Jess – then placed 1st, 2nd and 4th in the Under 14s Girls Final.

The boys also did well with Angus Scotney taking 2nd in the Under 16s Final – only closely missing out on 1st after being involved in a double interference – and Aiden Hopkins taking 4th in the Under 12s Open.

After a long day of surfing, the results were revealed and the competitors awarded with medals and prize money before Tretherras was announced as the winner of the team trophy.

Jaide Lowe, Tretherras Teaching Assistant and sister to finalist Jordy said, “It was a fierce day of competition so it was great to see the kids do our school proud and put us back on top.”

She continued, “There’s some fantastic little rising stars who are new to the scene as well as the more established surfers like team captain Angus. Overall, everyone performed brilliantly.”
