On Tuesday 29th April, Phil Oakes from Cornwall College Redruth held a cooking master class at Newquay Tretherras as part of their NT Chef competition.
With the help of two of his own students, Chef Oakes, a former Tretherras student and catering teacher, created a variety of dishes for pupils to taste, from savoury panna cotta to exotic ostrich meat.
Phil commented, “What was really great was that the students were willing to try everything I presented them with, even when some of the meals were quite unconventional.”
The session also gave students a chance to learn more about the cooking techniques involved in creating dishes such as how to fillet a fish.
Will Nicholls, a Year 7 Tretherras student said, “The master class was really educational and interesting but fun at the same time – I really enjoyed it!”
He continued, “Tasting the strange dishes gave us all an opportunity to experience something new. My favourite was the beetroot panna cotta although some of the others weren’t as keen!”
