Possible School Developments

Communications about Tretherras Development

Dear Parent/Carer

You will have noticed that Newquay Tretherras has been subject to local media coverage regarding a possible sale of approximately 2.76 hectares of the 30 hectare site, to fund a major refurbishment of our educational facilities.

We would like to take this opportunity to update you on the situation and provide you with further details.

The school needs modernisation

Newquay Tretherras is currently faced with extensive running costs to maintain the infrastructure of our buildings, some of which were built in the 1950s. While some parts of our site are well- equipped, reviews show some facilities, particularly in the lower end of the school, are no longer fit for purpose.

The school submitted a detailed proposal to the Secretary of State for Education outlining the benefits to the school community of selling a small portion of land. This proposal outlined how the school would then reinvest sale proceeds to fund a major rebuilding and refurbishment programme. Permission was given to Newquay Tretherras on 19th July 2012 to go ahead with this sale. The Minister gave his permission on the grounds that the benefits to children significantly outweigh the loss of the small area of land.

Area being considered for sale

The area of land under discussion is behind the school and covers approximately 2.67 hectares in total. It includes 1950s school buildings, the Hexagon Building, a multi-purpose hard play area, and 2.46 acres of open space. This open area is used for recreational activities only and is not the school sports field.

Sports Facilities

The school sports fields are to the front of the school covering 14.45 hectares and are not included in the proposed sale. This area, which meets the required sports field provision specified by Sports England, will remain an essential part of the school’s sporting facilities. Should the school modernisation programme go ahead, funding will allow these sports fields to be remodelled, creating additional space and sports pitches. We would also be able to establish new sporting facilities for both our students and the local community.

Newquay Tretherras also intends to continue to grow our sports provision through ongoing partnerships with local sports clubs, such as the Newquay Sports Centre, Heron Tennis Club, Waterworld, Newquay Indoor Bowling Club, Newquay and Par Athletics Club, Newquay Football Club, Newquay Cricket Club and Newquay Netball Club. These links with the community provide essential specialist provision to our students, as does our expert NT Sport Team.

Creating a modern learning environment

Development of the school site will update the main school building to create a 21st century learning environment. This will include purpose-built learning spaces and community accessible buildings, such as a performance theatre. It will also provide students with communal areas for shared learning, relaxation and pastoral activities.

An additional benefit of this redevelopment would be a significant increase in educational space. Currently, the oldest section of the school has 3,500 m2 of educational space for students: this space is difficult to adapt or alter to meet the growing needs of the school. The proposed changes would allow us to create a modern educational building of 5,000 m2, ensuring we accommodate our students in comfortable, appropriate surroundings. The current 1970’s building will be extensively refurbished.

Environmental Impact

The refurbishment will also incorporate various sustainable operating systems into our infrastructure. These will significantly reduce school running costs as well as ensuring a responsible approach towards environmental issues.

Minimising Disruption

The school is very clear that students and their education should not be disturbed by any redevelopment. Detailed consideration is being given to how development could proceed without interfering with the school’s day-to-day activities. For example, new school buildings would be ready to accommodate students before older facilities were taken out of use.

Public Consultation

To date, no agreement has been signed with a commercial buyer and no definitive plans have been made. If an agreement is reached, Newquay Tretherras will ensure that all interested parties have the opportunity to comment on the proposals and to contribute their own ideas. A series of public consultation activities will take place, and these will be publicised to local residents and the school community in advance.

Newquay Tretherras is passionate about providing education for students from Newquay and the surrounding villages. As an important part of the Newquay community, we take great pride in the community spirit we encourage in our students and staff. We greatly appreciate the support we receive from the local community and hope that this will continue in the future.

Yours sincerely
