At Newquay Tretherras, we believe it is important to maintain close links with the local Primary schools to ensure a smooth transition for students between Primary and Secondary school. Our Primary Events allow Primary students to experience a taster of life at Tretherras as well as offering oppurtunities to participate in sporting events and general competitions.
Primary outreach support team
Tretherras staff spend two days a week in local primaries delivering specialist lessons in English (Miss Lucy Newnham), Mathematics (Mrs Jo Band) and Science (Mrs Jenny Ellis-Davies). Each primary school determines the focus of the work delivered based upon the particular needs of the pupils in their school.
Newquay Tretherras sport staff deliver a wide programme of sporting activities to local primary school pupils. From inter-school competitions in Cross-Country and Tag Rugby to Multi-Skills sessions. We are able to use the extensive sports facilities at Tretherras and Newquay Sports centre to ensure a high quality experience for the pupils.
Master classes and workshops
Throughout the school year Newquay Tretherras runs a series of master classes and workshops in a wide variety of curriculum areas. These are target at specific groups of pupils, such as Gifted and Talented, Pupil Premium, Girls in Science, Boys writing etc. Subject specialist teachers deliver sessions to groups of pupils from different schools which gives the children a chance to work with others from across the Newquay area.
The NLP Inter-school general knowledge quiz has been running for many years now. Teams of four pupils are entered from each school (one each from years 3 to 6), who pit their knowledge against teams from three other schools to see who will make through to the grand final in March.
Last year saw the first inter-school spelling bee. The evening was a great success and it was amazing to see how the children responded to the challenge of having to spell ‘under the spotlight’. There are prizes for the winning school team and the top individual speller.
For three Saturdays in late September and early October, Newquay Tretherras put on three Youth Universities. These provide the opportunity for pupils in Year 5 and 6 to try out lessons and experience the facilities available at Tretherras. The three Universities are in Sport, Creative Arts and Science, Maths and Technology. Parents are actively encouraged to join on the learning too!
This takes place in Early September and provides the opportunity for pupils in Year 5 and 6, and their parents to look around the school. The evening is a self-guided tour of the whole school site, where you are able to talk to teaching staff and students in each curriculum area.
This follows on from the Open Evening. On the Open Morning pupils and parents are taken on a tour of the school to experience a ‘normal working day’ at Tretherras. The tour covers the whole of the site and there is the opportunity to drop in to lessons and see our students at work.
See Our School In Session
These are yet another opportunity to visit Newquay Tretherras and see the school ‘in action’. Invitations are sent out via primary schools for pupils form a particular primary to visit us and tour the school along with tier parents. These sessions take place in June after the KS2 SATs.
