We warmly welcome you to Newquay Tretherras, or Tretherras as the school is commonly known. It is one of Cornwall’s leading schools, with a well documented reputation for academic excellence and an impressive record of achievement in English, Maths, Science, The Arts and Sport. We are one of Cornwall’s biggest schools, consistently and significantly perform above the national averages.
Historically the school has been the site of the Newquay Grammar school, and the Newquay Comprehensive school. Both school united to form Newquay Tretherras school, which converted to Academy status on 1st April 2011. Tretherras has always been recognised for its quality of relationships, inspirational ethos, commitment to pastoral care, and places great emphasis on the moral and social welfare of its pupils in addition to their intellectual, physical and cultural development.
An Exceptional School
We are proud to provide a wide ranging education for over 1620 students aged 11–18 [including 260 in the Sixth Form] from Newquay and the surrounding area.
Tretherras is extremely popular with parents, and is regularly oversubscribed in all year groups, because of its warm welcoming ethos, extremely high standards and wide range of extra curricular activities.
The staff work very effectively as a team and the atmosphere at Tretherras is characterised by positive relationships between everyone. Students enjoy being part of a successful school: they are all valued individually and know they are central to our work and that their all round achievements will be celebrated. Sustaining our excellent reputation does not come about by accident: creating and maintaining an ethos in which all students feel they belong and can achieve is absolutely everyoney’s priority.

KS4 & 5
At KS4 and 5, the curriculum becomes progressively more complex and knowledge based. Learners are consistently challenged to identify relevant knowledge, and develop their autonomy in order to apply it to solve new problems.
An extensive curriculum choice offers learners personalised pathways and flightpaths, to prepare them as active 21st century citizens, ready for the constantly changing, technological world in which they will live and work.
Accreditation of learning takes place as soon as learners are ready, through early examination entries, or longer programmes of study.
Learning is made more powerful and relevant through a specialist Outdoor Education offer, comprising: adventure trips, challenging survival activities, creative use of the environment, local workplaces, and our local, national and global communities.
