Newquay Tretherras Student Awarded Prestigious Arkwright Scholarship.


Newquay Tretherras student Fynn Rodgers has been awarded a scholarship from the prestigious Arkwright Scholarships Trust.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships Trust is amongst the most prestigious award of their type in the UK that nurture the county’s future leaders of engineering industry.

The scholarship aims to inspire and nurture future leaders in Engineering and support students through their A Levels. The award aims to encourage students to pursue Engineering or Technical Design at University or through a higher-level apprenticeship and to take up careers in the field.

This year a record 1559 students applied from across the UK and Channel Islands. After a rigorous selection process comprising of a detailed application form, teacher reference, two-hour engineering aptitude exam and 20 minute interview. Just 395 Arkwright Engineering Scholarships were awarded this year to the very best students.

After the first stage of the application and interview at Brunel University, Fynn was successfully awarded a scholarship but without a sponsor.

Only recently a benefactor sponsor, who wishes to remain unknown, came forward to provide the funding for Fynn’s Post Sixteen education at Tretherras.

Dr Martin Thomas, Chief Executive of the Arkwright Scholarships Trust, stated ‘The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are highly sought after by students and respected by University admission tutors and Industry recruiters.’

He added, ‘It is fantastic to see a student from Newquay Tretherras Academy perform so well on the national stage and to achieve a Scholarship. I look forward to meeting Fynn at our National Awards Ceremony in late October, where the Scholarships are officially confirmed.

Fynn is planning to persure a career mining and will look to further his studies at Camborne School of Mines.
