Star Barkers were given 120 minutes to create their Christmas Showstopper in the Newquay Tretherras Bake Off 2017 final on 6th December.
The finalist had made it through group rounds that were open to Year 7-11 students, as an after school activity club.
In the earlier rounds, Year 9, 10 & 11students were asked to bake a sweet or savoury pastry product. Year 8 were given a choice of cupcakes or scones and Year 7 students had the task of making flapjacks or biscuits.
The successful finalist Star Bakers were: Year 9 Jenna Bailey and Ellie Cotterill, Year 8 Lowen Mears-Ollerenshaw, Ellen Paice-Phillips and Niamh Buck and Year 7 Jemima Talbot, Gracie Stoneman and Lauren Sandland.
In the final judges were impressed with the high standard of baking and the confidence of the students throughout, making judging very difficult. Creativity was shown in the presentation and range of final products.
The overall winner was Lowen with an amazing Christmas Yule log, complete with a whipped cream and chocolate chip filling, chocolate orange ganache and hand-made glittered holly. Gracie was runner-up with a fabulous Chocolate Bundt Cake, decorated like a Christmas Pudding.
House points have been given to all competitors, with extra points for Star Bakers and the winners. Lowen and Gracie both gained House Points for Lizard
Ms Debbie Maunder, teacher of Design & Technology at Newquay Tretherras commented, ‘I would like to thank all those who participated and made it such a difficult competition to judge, and to Mrs Skelton and Ms Ollerenshaw for helping me to run it.’
