New Science Labs at Newquay Tretherras

Newly refurbished science laboratories at Newquay Tretherras opened for the start of term 2015, ready to be used by students and teachers.

The refurbishment of the Newquay Tretherras science classrooms comes after the school were successful in a £410,000 from the Education Funding Agency Bid back in May.

The three new science rooms are bright, spacious work areas with modern furniture, which will support the latest teaching methods and allow facilities to be configurated in whichever way best to deliver practical lessons.

The new laboratories pleasantly surprised students who had their first lessons in the new rooms at the start of term.

Students Coral Stancliffe-Caldicott, Anna Knight and Tia Wright commented, “They feel so much more spacious and bright. There is more room to move around and get on with work. You really feel you’re in a science lab and not an old classroom.”

Mr Andrew Saundry, Director of Science at the Academy explained, “It is fantastic for our students to have these cutting edge laboratories. The new labs will ensure that students at Newquay Tretherras will have the very latest in science lab practices. We are very excited about starting the new year with such excellent facilities, especially for our A Level students.’

The new rooms will help to continue the successful number of students taking science as a subject. In this years exam results 92% of all Newquay Tretherras students passed a science course with a grade A*-C.

A further 3 science laboratories and technical areas will also be refurbished this year in order to complete the project.

Mr Saundry added, ‘It really highlights the commitment of the school to providing the best possible learning environment to our future scientists, from Year 7 right up to Year 13.”

Newquay Tretherras is still consulting on the estimated £15 million Priority Schools Building Programme to redevelop its 1950s block and provide new classrooms for English and Maths.
