Newquay Tretherras has been working with Gusto Catering, a Newquay business, to improve the catering provision for all of its students and staff.
The collaboration was set up with the aim to provide the school community with healthy and nutritious food during school hours that will help support their learning, activities and well-being.
The new school menu introduces a variety of tastes and foods that students may not have experienced before, as well as healthy versions of traditional favourite meals. All meals are freshly made from scratch in the school canteens.
Mr Simon Evans, Director of Gusto Catering explained, “It is a fantastic project to work on within our community with many rewards. We have really tried to generate new taste sensations, provide informed food choices, broaden the tasting palate and give people time to enjoy their food and be more social.”
Everyday there are two different main meal options with sides, such as Spicy Vegetable Chilli or Pulled Pork served with a large yorkie. Healthier versions of desserts are still on the menu such as Cocoa Sponge & Custard or Ice-Cream with Berry fruit salad.
Daisy and Lia in Year 10, explained how the new menus gave them more options to match their food preferences and how much of an improvement it is.
Daisy commented, “I never used to eat school dinners before but now I do eat here a few times a week and really like it.” Lia added, “I am gluten intolerant and before I only had the choice of jacket potatoes, now I have more interesting and tasty options.”
The new food offer has not just re-invented the menu but also provided different food service methods for students who are looking for grab and go meals.
Street style kitchen meals are available from the Street Kitchen counter. Six amazing salads from the Gusto Salad Bar have been a huge success so far. Freshly baked breads alongside a daily selection of pasta pots, noodle boxes, fritters and many other tasty street food classics from around the world are a favourite with students on the go.
Local MP, Mr Steve Double, who was in school to officially open the new Science laboratories joined students for lunch to sample meals and hear directly from the student what they thought.
Mr Double commented, “Amazing, really impressed! The food was such good quality and tasted fantastic. What a great idea to get together with a local business in order provide the school with food that is of such a high standard and at a really competitive price.’
