Applied Science – BTEC National

The BTEC National Applied Science includes a solid foundation of mandatory science content. That means employers and higher education providers can be confident BTEC qualified science students demonstrate the same skills and understanding and still have the opportunity to gain specialist science knowledge through studying optional units.

There is a range of course sizes, depending on your option choices and availability of provision.

Year 1 Applied Science :

Certificate (0.5 A levels) – 2 mandatory units

  1. Principles and Applications of Science
  2. Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

Extended Certificate (1 A level) – 4 units (3 mandatory units and 1 optional)

  1. Principles and Applications of Science
  2. Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  3. Science Investigation Skills
  4. 1 Optional Unit

Year 2 Applied Science :

Diploma (2 A levels) – 8 units (6 mandatory and 2 optional)

  1. Principles and Applications of Science
  2. Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  3. Science Investigations Skills
  4. Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  5. Principles and Applications of Science II
  6. Investigative Project
  7. 1 Optional Unit
  8. 1 Optional Unit

Assessment details

BTEC Nationals use a combination of assessment styles to give students confidence they can apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace – and have the study skills to continue learning on higher education courses and throughout their career.

  • Assignments: Set and marked by teachers; verified by Pearson. Still the main form of assessment for all BTEC Nationals.
  • Tasks: provide students with work-based challenges in timed, realistic work conditions.
  • Written exams: Students create written answers to practical questions in exam conditions.

Entry Requirements

Students need a good qualification from GCSE Double or Triple Science. We require that students have achieved a minimum of grade C in all GCSE external exam modules.

Expectations

Assignments must be completed and students must work to clear deadlines. Students will need to develop practical and investigative skills and also utilise analytical skills throughout the course. Good numeracy and literacy skills are also key to ensuring student success.

Outside of the Classroom

Students must put in a number of hours every week outside of the classroom to consolidate their learning and to prepare for tasks and written exams.
